#4 - Marvel/Disney

Marvel/Disney

I was surprised when I recently read about Disney purchasing Marvel Comics. It is probably a good thing for Marvel, and it likely won't have a huge impact on the material they produce. If it does, hopefully it will make it better. But I couldn't help imagining some amalgamations of their recognizable properties. I originally wanted that Mickey-Wolverine to be saying, "M-I-C-See you in Hell. K-E-Y- Why? Because I'll kill you.", but decided that was a little harsh for print publication. My concept for Mutant High School Musical (which I would watch in a heartbeat) was to use the original X-Men, which I did, but the HSM image has six students, so I added Nightcrawler, because he is cool and visually interesting. The thing about that image that I find so surprising is how funny it is to see them happy and smiling. They are usually so angsty. Maybe Prof. X should let them perform a musical instead of fighting Sentinels and such all the time. The half-Miley Cyrus/half-Spider-Man face is an emulation of the device used by Steve Ditko, etc. Whenever Peter Parker's Spidey-Sense tingled while he was out of costume he would be drawn with a half Spider-Man mask on and the wavy lines. But I thought this was even funnier with the Hannah Montana wig on top of it. The Incredible Pooh is just silly. "POOH SMASH HUNDRED ACRE WOOD!" Lisa suggested the "Oh bother" which really makes it for me. To comply with the font standards at The Commons I used a font in Photoshop for this. Since I was doing so much there already I essentially put the entire piece together there, using my Wacom tablet instead of pen and ink. I think it looks sharper and better than the earlier pieces as a result. The only exception is the cast of MHSM which I drew in pencil and then "inked" over in Photoshop.

  1. This one cracks me up each time I see it. And the art just blows me away. I'm sorry the paper infringed on your personal standards, but it IS a really sharp piece.
