#4 - Marvel/Disney

Marvel/Disney

I was surprised when I recently read about Disney purchasing Marvel Comics. It is probably a good thing for Marvel, and it likely won't have a huge impact on the material they produce. If it does, hopefully it will make it better. But I couldn't help imagining some amalgamations of their recognizable properties. I originally wanted that Mickey-Wolverine to be saying, "M-I-C-See you in Hell. K-E-Y- Why? Because I'll kill you.", but decided that was a little harsh for print publication. My concept for Mutant High School Musical (which I would watch in a heartbeat) was to use the original X-Men, which I did, but the HSM image has six students, so I added Nightcrawler, because he is cool and visually interesting. The thing about that image that I find so surprising is how funny it is to see them happy and smiling. They are usually so angsty. Maybe Prof. X should let them perform a musical instead of fighting Sentinels and such all the time. The half-Miley Cyrus/half-Spider-Man face is an emulation of the device used by Steve Ditko, etc. Whenever Peter Parker's Spidey-Sense tingled while he was out of costume he would be drawn with a half Spider-Man mask on and the wavy lines. But I thought this was even funnier with the Hannah Montana wig on top of it. The Incredible Pooh is just silly. "POOH SMASH HUNDRED ACRE WOOD!" Lisa suggested the "Oh bother" which really makes it for me. To comply with the font standards at The Commons I used a font in Photoshop for this. Since I was doing so much there already I essentially put the entire piece together there, using my Wacom tablet instead of pen and ink. I think it looks sharper and better than the earlier pieces as a result. The only exception is the cast of MHSM which I drew in pencil and then "inked" over in Photoshop.

#3 - Seldom Seen Smurfs

Seldom Seen Smurfs

This one is pretty self-explanatory I think. Lisa came up with Agoraphobic Smurf, which is the cream of the crop.

#2 - lil' Losties

Here's my second Oodles, making me a month ahead of my deadline. Whoo-hoo!

lil' Losties

The trick here really was fitting in all the characters from the show that I wanted to, which just wasn't possible, so I tried going for just the essentials. Other than possibly Superboy, one of the first examples of the "kidification" of characters that I can think of is Little Archie from the late '50s. So that's the style I decided to work in, the cast of Lost as drawn by Samm Schwartz or Bob Bolling. And of course that's Casper's face on Little Smokie.

#1 - Harry Potter's Next Seven Years

Harry Potter, the Next Seven Years

I started this blog as a location to post the comics I'm creating for publication in The Commons, a monthly newspaper for the Windham County, VT area. I believe this particular cartoon will be included in an issue coming out mid-July.

I chose the title, Oodles of Doodles, because my step kids have taken to calling me "Doodles." At first it was Addy, then Addy-Doodles, and now just Doodles. Now I have neighborhood children shouting "Hey Doodles!" at me, which is both funny and unnerving. Coincidentally, my friend Matt has a blog called The Doodle Delicatessen, and my friend Andy Hook used to go by the name "Doodlebug" online. And I once had a dog named Doodles too. Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
